Introduction
When configuring my router, I realize that the coexistence between WiFi and Zigbee can be problematic, as both technologies use the same 2.4 GHz frequency band. Proper configuration is therefore essential to minimize interference.
Understand the problem
Frequency spectrum
- WiFi uses the 2.4 GHz band with 20/22 MHz wide channels.
- The Zigbee also uses the 2.4 GHz band but with narrower 5 MHz channels.
- WiFi channels 1, 6 and 11 are the only non-overlapping channels in 2.4 GHz.
My situation
As I use the Zigbee 11 channel, which is in the lower part of the 2.4 GHz spectrum, I have to configure my WiFi accordingly to minimise interference.
Recommended configuration for my RT6600
1. 2.4 GHz WiFi Configuration
- I connect to the SRM (Synology Router Manager) administration interface.
- I go to ‘WiFi Settings’ and then to the ‘Radio’ tab.
- For the 2.4 GHz band, I configure:
- Channel: 6 or 1 (I avoid channel 11). I'm going to prefer 1.
- Channel width: 20 MHz (to minimize overlaps).
- Power: Medium or Low if my devices are close.
2. Optimization of the 5 GHz band
- I am activating the 5 GHz band.
- I use Smart Connect to automatically direct compatible devices to the 5 GHz band.
- I set up separate SSIDs for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz if I want more precise control.
3. Additional measures
- I place my Zigbee coordinator at least 2 meters from the WiFi router.
- I avoid metal barriers between devices.
- I regularly monitor network performance.
Verification of performance
Indicators of potential problems
- Frequent disconnections of Zigbee devices.
- High latency in device responses.
- Difficulty adding new Zigbee devices.
- High Zigbee channel utilisation rate.
Troubleshooting solutions
- If the problems persist:
- I try to change the WiFi channel (I switch between 1 and 6).
- I reduce the power of WiFi transmission.
- I am considering physically moving the Zigbee coordinator.
Conclusion
By correctly configuring my RT6600, I ensure a harmonious coexistence between WiFi and Zigbee. The key is to maintain sufficient spectral separation between WiFi and Zigbee channels, while optimizing power and device placement.
Continuous monitoring
I regularly monitor the performance of my network, adjust the settings if necessary, keep the RT6600 firmware up to date and use spectrum analysis tools if available.
