Compatible with Home Assistant via Z2M or ZHA, these devices combine reliable detection (smouldering smoke or anti-false positive heat) with smooth integration for instant alerts, push notifications and life-saving automations.

Objectives of the Comparative

This guide, based on tests carried out mid-2026, evaluates 10 consumer models according to price (11-120€), autonomy (3-10 years), EN14604/CE standards mandatory in France, and advanced features such as smoke density, hush, tamper or OTA.

Priority: legal security and HA supervision, eliminating non-compliant.

On reading these elements, the Xiaomi and Onenuo are eliminated, the lack of certification is not negotiable.

The other elements of the table classify all equipment that meets the standards in an equivalent manner in accordance with the recommendations EN14604, namely: siren ≥85 dB at 3 m, voltage/low battery indicator (audio and visual signal at least 30 days before end of life), manual test button, smoke sensitivity tested on 4 types of fires (wood/cotton smouldering lights, plastic/liquid fast lights), resistance to false alarms (dust, humidity, steam), operating temperature from -10°C to +55°C, non-ionising battery (optical/photoelectric allowed, without radioactive source), impossible attachment without battery, no battery signal, shock resistance, vibration, corrosion and EMC, battery life ≥1 year, separate audible signals (alarm vs. low battery).

The presence of a temperature sensor It is not just a gadget, it can be useful to check the temperatures of the rooms, I found it useful to report them.

Since the detectors are usually glued to the ceiling, the temperature is higher than that at human height. Thus, the presence of a possibility of calibration to lower by a few degrees is useful. This is more of an offset than a calibration for purists, but it is the term chosen by developers.

Finally, the possibility of defining the need for temperature accuracy avoids asking the sensor to send the temperature as soon as it changes by one tenth of a degree, since a temperature to the nearest degree is often sufficient and will save batteries.

🏠 EXHIBITIONS

This table does not talk about the detection performance, but about what each detector actually goes up in Home Assistant once integrated (entities/sensors/commands available via Zigbee2MQTT or equivalent). The idea is to see if you will only have a “smoke detected” state, or also advanced information/commands like smoke density, silence/hush mode, test, or fault indicators.

It can be seen, for example, that theAqara exposes smoke density measurements (smoke _density and smoke _density _dbm) in addition to the smoked state, this must work much like air quality sensors. With these elements we can for example trigger pre-alerts, ventilations or others.

Conversely, some models remain very “simple” on the home automation side, which is enough to trigger automations but limits fine analysis and diagnosis.

Finally, models like Frient SMSZB-120 Rather, they set out operational concepts (max_duration, fault, reliability) that are useful for monitoring the device and understanding a problem, even without going back to “smoke density”.

For the ‘Stop siren / Hush’ functions, keep in mind that depending on the model the action may be contextual (e.g. mutate only during an alarm and for a limited time), therefore to be considered as a comfort against untimely alarms, not as a main safety function.

✨ ADVANCED FUNCTIONALITIES AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This table summarizes the advanced features and gives my final recommendations based on all the previous criteria (EN 14604 standards, HA/Zigbee integration, autonomy, advanced exposures).

Explanations of lines

• Remote fire/intrusion alarm: Possibility to trigger an alarm (fire or intrusion) from HA to check the Zigbee network or simulate an emergency. I really like this option.
• ​Interconnection: Automatic activation of other detectors (RF or Zigbee) during an alarm, this is required by NF 292 in France.
• ​Tamper Detection: Signal if the detector is opened or ripped off (anti-sabotage).
• OTA Updates: Over-the-air firmware updates to fix bugs or improve compatibility. This is very convenient and now necessary because the products no longer come out without bugs.

🎯 My final recommendation

❌ I recommend eliminating first Xiaomi and Onenuo because they do not comply with EN 14604 and are therefore illegal in France (or at least non-compliant).

❌ The Schneider and Bosch are in a high price range without really huge inflows. Potentially a pro range as I compare on a consumer basis. We can imagine that the price is a guarantee of seriousness and robustness, but they are not in my top 3 because of their price range.

✅ The We E8 represents my best choice quality/price ratio for standard (or even basic) use. I regret the poor quality of its integration, few exhibitions, no stack level and the tamper does not work at home. For very basic use, it is enough.

❌ The Chinese model MOES ZSS-HM-SSD01-A-MS is a little more expensive than the We European, without bringing anything more, I do not retain it.

✅ For superior robustness, with several parts to equip, I prefer the Couple of Frient HESZB-120 and SMSZB-120 which adapt to the activity in these rooms:

• SMSZB-120 (smoke) : suitable for bedrooms, living rooms, corridors. Detects slow lights (furniture, cables). It is mandatory in EN14604.
• HESZB-120 (heat) : suitable for kitchens, garages, laundry rooms, fireplaces, dusty/wet workshops. Ignore cooking/steam/dust smoke, alert only real fire (heat increase). Perfect anti-false positive supplement.

❌ TheAqara SD-S01D Technically excels with its smoke density and OTA updates. It kept its bad reputation as its versions before 2021 were capricious and uncertified. I do not have the JY-GZ-01AQ (in Chinese sellers), I have doubts about the EC conformity of these models. The name SD-S01D seems to be the European certified trade name, so be careful.

✅ The Heimann HS1SA-E-PLUS is the brand new band, released in March 2026. The quality and quantity of the exhibitions and therefore the possibilities of this equipment are absolutely breathtaking. I love its original ‘Interconnectable’ functionality, which deserves a stop. Its built-in thermometer is configurable. It can be triggered on both intrusion and fire alarms. This model is cheaper than the Frient SMSZB-120

🏆My final ranking 🥇 If we want a Single Detector, efficient and cheap, it is the We E8 which must be chosen. Nothing more can be done than to detect smoke, but that is probably what most users are looking for. 🥇 If we want a solid torque, I advise to equip with Frient HESZB-120 for the garage or kitchen and with HS1SA-E-PLUS for other parts.
